Shortly after, Gay Pride marches started and soon changed into the multi-day Pride celebrations we know today. This is considered to be the catalyst for the modern gay rights movement. Why June? It is thought that Pride celebrations occur in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots that began Jin New York City, in which a series of violent conflicts broke out between police officers following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village. Thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people gather each year to take part in parades and marches saturated with rainbow-colored flags, street festivals, picnics and parties. June is the peak time for Pride celebrations in the United States and around the world. For the gay and lesbian community, it's the time to really show their PRIDE. Summertime holds a different meaning for many people.
